Programs in this Core Program Area empower youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process and respect their own and others’ cultural identities.

Youth of the Year

The Youth of the Year program promotes and celebrates service to Club, community and family; academic performance; moral character; life goals; and poise and public speaking ability. The Youth of the Year program is used as a year-round tool for fostering young people’s character, personal growth and leadership qualities.  One to two teens are selected to represent the club at the local BGCH YOY competition.  From there, the winning teen represents the state, and potential the region and nation.  James Stabilio of the Spalding Clubhouse went to California in July 2011 to represent the state of Hawaii for the Youth of the Year competition.
Torch Club

Torch Club is a leadership and service club for youth ages 11-12 that focuses on implementing activities in four areas: service to club and community, education, health and fitness, and social recreation. Through the democratic process, the Torch Club works to customize the program calendar in the clubhouse to the needs of the members.

Leaders in Training

The LIT program focuses on service learning within the clubhouse and the community.  Teens that demonstrate respect, responsibility and leadership within the clubhouse are invited to participate in the program.  Teens have the opportunity for special field trips as well as other programs such as Career Launch and Money Matters, which promote career exploration, making sound educational and financial decisions, and guidance to find success in the world of work.  Teens in this program also practice civic engagement and the democratic process through selecting officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer).
